Choosing the alarm detection devices that suit your lifestyle and offer the protection you require is a decision you will have to make, but we would be delighted to advise you if you're unsure of which alarm system is right for you. Although both are extremely reliable alarm systems there are advantages and disadvantages to both. There are two main systems types, a Passive Infra-red system (PIR), and an Inertia Shock sensor system. Both alarm systems can also be integrated together if required, and both would use magnetic reed contacts. As well as the standard alarm installation, there are many enhancements that you can add to your alarm system. Installing an alarm may get you up to 20% off your household insurance, with 5% for a smoke alarm.

Enhancements to your alarm

As well as the standard alarm configuration, there are many enhancements that you can add to your alarm. Some Typical Enhancements are:

All Skynet Alarm systems come with the option of Alarm monitoring.

Passive Infrared System (PIR)

A passive infrared detector (PIR) operates by detecting heat movement given off by a person's body. PIR's are almost exclusively used in commercial applications due to reliable detection with a very low risk of false alarms. Advantages to PIR's are low risk of false alarms; PIR's cannot be activated externally. A disadvantage is that the full alarm cannot be armed when you are moving around in your home during the day, however a "night time" setting allows you to turn on your system at night when you're going to bed. SkyNet Security systems will always recommend fitting at least one PIR if you decide on an Inertia shock sensor alarm system.

Inertia Shock Sensors

Inertia Shock Sensors are normally fitted to windows and doors, they work by sensing shock or vibration by a potential intruder trying to force open or break a window or door. An advantage to shock sensors is that movement around your home is permitted when the alarm system is armed due to perimeter protection. A disadvantage is that a false alarm may be activated by a person banging on a window or door externally, however this is likely to be a rare occurrence and sensitivity can be adjusted. This kind of protection is still a very reliable and user-friendly system. SkyNet Security Systems will always advise installing at least one PIR (Passive Infra-Red) with this sort of alarm system for added security.

Magnetic Reed Contact

Magnetic reed contacts are fitted normally to the external doors of your home or garage. These sensors activate the alarm when the door is opened. This type of sensor would be used in conjunction with PIR (passive infra-red) or inertia shock sensor systems for added protection

Alarm Panic Buttons

Panic buttons or personal attack buttons are used to activate the alarm when you feel you may be under threat. Panic buttons will activate the alarm even if your system is not armed. The remote Keypad of your alarm system incorporates a built in panic button as standard.

Smoke Alarm

Smoke alarms can be added to, and powered from your burglar alarm, they are maintenance free and in the event of a fire, the internal siren and external siren of your burglar alarm will activate in a different fashion, warning you or passers-by. Skynet Security Systems recommend at least one smoke alarm; it could help to save your life.
